The first thing I noticed about the American Profile magazine article (July ‘08) was the vintage glider and porch furniture in the pictures. The article is entitled “The Front Porch” and is available online at www.americanprofile.com/article/27639. If you love porches the way I do, this article’s for you. It covers a lot of territory, but the thing I enjoyed most is the part about the Professional Porch Sitters Union, an organization (I use the word loosely) started by Claude Stephens of Louisville, Kentucky. Since Claude thought of it, the Union has taken on a life of its own, surprising especially to Claude himself. The motto is “Sit down a spell. That can wait”. There’s a picture of Claude on a front porch sitting on a vintage piecrust glider. Boy, would I love to restore that one! I can identify so much with Charles and the rest of the Union. There really is nothing like a glider and a porch. The combination is magic. Coffee on a crisp fall morning, a glass of wine in the afternoon, really any time of day for any reason, sitting on a glider on your porch will help you realize that a lot of what you have to do really can wait… and should! You’ll be better off for it. You can start a local chapter of the Professional Porch Sitters Union in your town. I founded PPS local 2055 here in Charlotte. It’s the perfect kind of organization for me. There are no meetings. There are no projects. Nothing to do, really, except to sit on your porch, preferably on a glider or rocker from Mulberry Street.
