We did not leave the house for the 4th of July. Instead, we had our best friends over to enjoy the 4th out on the porch. The weather cooperated beautifully, giving us a reprieve from the heat for a few days. The porch was an oasis, cooled by the sea breezes and warmed by our conversation and laughter.
We relaxed on our porch glider and bouncers, enjoying the gentle movement and comfort that is part of the beauty of vintage outdoor furniture. We played some ping pong and ate a summer feast, some of it from our garden. We had chocolate cake and apple pie. We enjoyed the comfort and familiarity of our shared history of many, many years with friends we love like family. Phil Feral, our porch muse, and the rest of our cats had to go in early because the neighborhood fireworks started before dark and continued through the big show at the park. As darkness fell, we went up to the 3rd floor porch and had a bird’s eye view of the fireworks at Riverfront Park. For me, it was a near perfect day. This was the first 4th of July celebration we’ve ever hosted. I really believe we did it this year because, in this house, we have 2 lovely porches and a wealth of lovely porch furniture to share and enjoy.
