Russel Wright was a premier designer in the 30s, 40s and 50s. He believed, “Good design is for everyone” and sought to bring his vision to a variety of mass-produced pieces in plastic, ceramics and metal. He and his wife, Mary, espoused a more relaxed and informal lifestyle through their designs. For a great overview of the scope of his design career, take a look at his Designs for Living portfolio at the Manitoga, the Russel Wright Design Center website. According to the website, “Russel Wright revolutionized the American home and the way people lived there. His inexpensive, mass produced dinnerware, furniture, appliances, and textiles were not only visually and technically innovative, but were also the tools to achieve his concept of “easier living,” a unique American lifestyle that was gracious yet contemporary and informal”. We here at Mulberry Street are proud to offer you three 1940s Russel Wright folding chairs.

Stan says, “The beauty of buying vintage furniture is that it comes with a past life. Vintage furnishings provide us with a link to past eras and past lives – in essence to one another.” Well said, Stan. I think of people sitting on their porches on some of our chairs from the 1930s, enduring the Great Depression, but still together, still finding pleasure in each others company and conversation. I think of servicemen coming home from World War II in the 1940s, sitting on their mothers’ porch gliders telling stories to family and friends or just enjoying the quiet, gentle motion that told them they were really home. I think of the babies being rocked, couples courting and the Moms and Dads who are all still here with us in a sense because we are sharing their furniture. Continue reading →
