I saw Nan last night. She’s the friend who rescued her neighbor’s chair from the trash collector. Her neighbor, a 94-year old retired postal worker, loved his chair. He sat in it in every day. I imagine his view of the world was pretty much what he could see from his yard, so having his comfortable chair with its gentle, rhythmic motion was pretty important to him. I imagine he looked forward to going out and seeing his neighbors every day and enjoyed watching what was going on in the lives of those around him. I’m sure he was glad to see Nan. Nan is the kind of person you’re always glad to see, because she is always purely herself which is to say delightful. Nan is a teacher who has 1950′s metal Youngstown cabinets in her kitchen. That alone is enough to make a person delightful! She is the one who called me and asked if I wanted the chair she saved. Of course, I did. I told her last night that we had restored the chair and put it on the website and that we found a matching glider to pair it with. She said her neighbor had a matching glider also but she didn’t know what happened to it. So our 2 pieces didn’t start out being a pair to each other, but were once part of a pair and now are part of a pair again. Just like it was intended. I love when that happens. Continue reading →
